Leaving an abusive relationship is a personal decision. For some people, separation can be a period of increased risk, particularly where the abusive person feels they are losing control.

Planning considerations

Depending on your circumstances, you may want to think about:

  • where you and any children could go;
  • safe transport;
  • access to money and medication;
  • important identification and documents;
  • housing or refuge options;
  • school, nursery or care arrangements;
  • phones, passwords and location sharing;
  • specialist legal information where needed.

Use a safe device if necessary

If you think your phone or online accounts are monitored, consider using a safer device when seeking support.

After separation

Abuse can continue through stalking, harassment, finances, technology, children or unwanted contact. Review your safety plan as circumstances change.
