If you are concerned that another person may have access to your phone, email or online accounts, digital-security changes may help. However, sudden changes can sometimes increase risk by alerting the person monitoring you.

Consider using a safer device

If possible, use a device that the other person cannot access when researching support, changing important account details or creating a new email address.

Review account access

Depending on your circumstances, you may want to review:

  • recovery email addresses and phone numbers;
  • devices signed into your accounts;
  • location-sharing permissions;
  • shared cloud accounts;
  • password-manager access;
  • multi-factor authentication settings.

Avoid predictable passwords

Use unique passwords where possible and avoid information another person could easily guess.

Do not rely on private browsing alone

Private or incognito browsing does not make a device invisible. Network logs, downloads, account activity or monitoring software may still reveal activity.

If you believe your technology is being used to threaten or stalk you, seek specialist domestic-abuse or technology-safety support.
